  And how does the parent give permission to use the clinic? A form? A "note from mom". Geez.

  You know, I generally don't say things like this, because it sounds like my hysterical husband, but, it seems to me that in some respects, it's true. But I have a disclaimer, that if the parents are involved and talk to their kids, this shouldn't be the case. Returning...

  The media (think Britney Spears, et.al.) and toys (think Bratz dolls) are telling our daughters that it's a great, glamorous thing to dress like harlots and be sexual at earlier and earlier ages. If the parents are too lazy to be involved in what the girls are watching and not really paying attention to what they're buying the girls to play with (again, you can't be lazy...), the parents are part of the problem! So, now, by taking away the responsiblity of actually taking them to a GYN for exams and being a PART of their daughters' lives, this school district will add to the ability of lazy parents to DO NOTHING. Great.

  And "dealing with it" is giving birth control to the GIRLS through the school nurse? Normally, I'm a very matter-of-fact, make a statement, deal with reality type of person, and I guess I'm getting soft as I grow older, but I can't get on board with giving 11-year-old girls BC pills. WHERE ARE THE PARENTS?! How has it fallen to the local school board to administer this program? Why is it just girls (yes, I know there's no pill for boys)? Why not offer condoms? At least that's not a pharmaceutical!

  OK, nvr, I normally agree with you, but I have to disagree here. I HAVE an 11-year-old daughter. I would have an anurism (sp?) if I found out she was getting birth control pills from the school nurse. I KNOW many kids have sex at young ages (I was 14 myself), but why in the heck would parents hand off their duty to a SCHOOL?! Geez, they took away corporal punishment, as Coffee said, they can't give aspirin... but we're going to give them the most precious thing...our daughter's sexuality, self-esteem, etc, etc?

  If one girl gets pregnant in the locality, doesn't it seem like overkill to give ALL the girls easy access to birth control?

  I remember being a young teenage girl and let me tell you...if I could have gotten my hands on the pill at that age, I would have been A LOT more promiscuous than I was without it!

  had a chat with mr. witness last night.

  it started out by me asking him what his definition of politics is.

  i asked because he sits watching cnn and knows all about the current campaign...and it occurred to me that he was "participating" in politics, albeit on the fringe.
